Frequently Asked Questions
I have been a student of the romance genre for 25 years and have been writing for ten. I have been commissioning romance manuscripts for a boutique publisher since 2018 and work closely with authors throughout the editing process to bring their stories to publication standards.
I hold a Certificate of Professional Editing and Proofreading, a Graduate Diploma of Science (Librarianship), and a Bachelor of Education. I am a member of the Romance Writers of Australia and attend frequent professional development sessions related to romance writing.
I edit using the resources relevant to the regional English in which you have written: US English — Chicago Manual of Style + Oxford Dictionary (US edition); UK English — New Oxford Style Manual + Oxford Dictionary (British English edition); AU English — Style manual + Macquarie Dictionary.
No. Even if you purchase a Structural Edit, you should have performed self-edits. I would also advise that you seek feedback from at least one other person. You should revise and eliminate as many developmental and structural issues as possible before investing in professional editing services.
A manuscript assessment will help you identify your story’s strengths and weaknesses. I analyse plot structure and character development to determine whether your story meets reader and genre expectations. See my Romance Manuscript Assessment service.
Redrafted more than once and worked with a copyeditor already? A proofread should suffice. Confident in your abilities and believe you’ve ironed out all developmental issues? A copyedit is all you need. Worried some issues remain? A structural edit would be best. Still in doubt? Request a quote; I can review the samples of your manuscript and advise.
Yes. When you request a quote, I am willing to edit your sample for the relevant fee ($18 for 1000 words) so that you can determine if I’m the right editor for you. I offer FREE samples to my newsletter subscribers. Be sure to request a sample edit in the miscellaneous section of the form.
For an additional fee, I can track the spelling and style choices you’ve made to help you as you proofread. This document will also come in particularly useful if you’re writing a series. By the time you write book four, you may have forgotten the choices you made when writing book one! See Editing Extras for more information.
As a commissioning editor, I write the blurbs for the titles I work on. I know many writers loathe writing blurbs — but I love it! For an additional fee, I can write you a killer book description (if I edit or proofread the whole manuscript), which includes a hook, the blurb and a call to action. See Editing Extras for more information.
