Want to work with a specialist romance editor? I’m experienced, dedicated and professional! Let’s ensure all the “big picture” elements of your manuscript are working together to make your romance story the best it can be.
In a Romance Manuscript Assessment, I provide detailed feedback on your story’s strengths and weaknesses, addressing elements such as:
- Plot development & structure
- Character development & believability
- Point of view
- Writing style & technique
- Narrative & scene pacing
Want to ensure your story meets readers’ genre expectations? I will also consider the development of the central romantic relationship and comment on its structural elements:
- The meet cute
- Romantic tension
- Getting together / almost getting together
- Getting torn apart
- The HEA / HFN
By collating my findings in a Developmental Report, I will explain why certain elements aren’t working and provide practical tips for addressing the issues during revisions. The feedback I provide will give you the confidence you need to tackle your next draft.

Libby’s assessment of my manuscript was spot on! She understood what I was trying to achieve and offered practical guidance in the steps I should take to tackle revisions. I found her assessment so helpful that I immediately signed up to work with her one on one to revise the manuscript and finally get it heading in the direction it needs to go. Libby is so easy to work with; she tailors everything to meet my needs as a writer, and we work at a pace that suits me. I have recommended Libby to everyone I know. Her services are a worthy investment for any writer wanting to take their novel to the next level.Tanya Nellestein – Emerging author
Frequently Asked Questions
I have been a student of the romance genre for 25 years and have been writing for ten. I have been commissioning romance manuscripts for a boutique publisher since 2018 and work closely with authors throughout the editing process to bring their stories to publication standards.
I hold a Certificate of Professional Editing and Proofreading, a Graduate Diploma of Science (Librarianship), and a Bachelor of Education. I am a member of the Romance Writers of Australia and attend frequent professional development sessions related to romance writing.
The industry standards for the romance genre are: 1,500 to 10,000 words for short stories, 20,000 to 40,000 words for novellas, and 60,000 to 90,000 words for full-length novels. 100,000+ words is considered too long for the romance genre.
No. It is advisable to revise your manuscript and perhaps seek feedback from at least one other person before commissioning an assessment. You will get the most benefit from an assessment if you have already addressed the issues you can identify.
Absolutely. If a partial manuscript assessment is the best option for you at the moment, I would recommend having at least the first 25% of the manuscript assessed. This will give me an idea of how the story’s development is progressing. The cost will be relative to the word count of the portion I am to assess.
