What personal data I collect and why I collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

I use the plugins, Smush and Hummingbird. These plugins use the Stackpath Content Delivery Network (CDN). Stackpath may store web log information of site visitors, including IPs, UA, referrer, Location and ISP info of site visitors for seven days. Files and images served by the CDN may be stored and served from countries other than your own. Stackpath’s privacy policy can be found here: https://www.stackpath.com/legal/privacy-statement/.

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Through the contact form on my website, I collect only your name, email address and information pertinent to your enquiry. This data is required to enable me to reply to your request for information. This data may be stored for a period of up to twelve months for customer service purposes. This information is never used for marketing purposes.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on this site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

Cookies do not provide me with access to your computer or any information about you other than that which you elect to share with me.

You can use your web browser’s cookie settings to determine how my website uses cookies. If you do not want my website to store cookies on your computer or device, you can amend your settings. Please note that this may affect how my website functions, and some pages may become unavailable to you.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics

I use Google Analytics to gain insight into the activity on my website and improve its functionality. Google Analytics uses cookies to analyse user activity on the site, such as pages visited, time spent on the site, when users visit and the country in which they are located.

If you wish to prevent your data from being used by Google Analytics, you can get a Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, which is available here: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Who I share your data with

Your data may be stored on third party data servers to allow me to invoice you and receive payments.

I use the accounting software Wave for invoicing and to receive credit card payments. Their privacy policy can be found here: https://my.waveapps.com/privacy/.

I also use the money transfer service Transferwise to receive payments from outside Australia. Their privacy policy can be found here: https://transferwise.com/au/privacy-policy.

How long I retain your data

Client data is kept for at least five years as per requirements of the Australian Taxation Office.

If you use the contact form on my website, the data collected may be stored for a period of up to twelve months for customer service purposes.

If you leave a comment on this site, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where I send your data

My website hosting is provided by Digital Pacific. Based in Sydney, Australia, they comply with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Visitor comments on this website may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Your contact information

Your contact information is only ever used to respond to your enquiries, to liaise with you during the term of our working agreement, and for accounting purposes in the running of my business.

I will never use this data for marketing and promotional purposes, unless you have requested to be notified about special offers.

Additional information

If you have questions about this policy or wish to request the removal of your data, you are welcome to email me at [email protected].
